Inside VR & AR (Jan 23rd, 2019)

1. The newly launched Live Planet VR system offers an “end-to-end pipeline” for 360-degree stereoscopic livestreaming and distribution. The $10K package supplies everything a streamer would need (sans computer), including a custom Live Planet device that sports a ring of 16 cameras capturing video in 360 and performing real-time onboard stitching. This package is less expensive than similar offerings from Nokia and Jaunt (in the $50K-$100K range), but as Road to VR points out, the quality of such livestreams still faces quality concerns. Give it another year or two, though, and we may see a more attractive value propositions in the pipe. — ROAD TO VR

Those assets include London-based Blippar’s platform tech, the assets of Layar (which Blippar bought in 2014), and the “Blippar” name. The assets will reportedly go to a new company (retaining the “Blippar” name) that will focus on “[unifying] and [standardizing] AR formats,” according to the company. The new entity will also retain many of the original company’s engineers, as well as its CEO. — VENTUREBEAT
