IN YOUR GLASS - CELEBRATING WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH

We want your wine glass to be just as full as your wine knowledge. Each week we'll bring you something unique, fun, or just plain tasty to seek out.

We're celebrating the launch of Inside Wine with -- what else -- Champagne! In honor of Women's History Month, we're highlighting J. Lassalle, a female-run property in Chigny-Les-Roses in Champagne, France. Jules Lassalle founded the estate in 1942, but after his passing in 1982, his wife, Olga, and daughter Chantal, took over winemaking duties. Today, J. Lassalle's motto of “une femme, un esprit, un style” (one woman, one spirit, one style) is upheld by Jules' granddaughter, Angéline Templier. This is considered a "grower champagne" (Récoltant-Manipulant, or "RM" for short) as grapes are sourced from estate vineyards, Wine Spectator says of the 2009 vintage, "A fresh Champagne, well-knit and lacy in texture, with chalk-tinged notes of apple blossom, ripe raspberry, ground ginger and spun honey. Creamy, with a clean-cut, zesty finish. Drink now through 2024."

40 up-and-coming winemakers will share their wines at the first Sonoma Garagiste Wine Festival on May 12. The festival is an opportunity for micro-producers (1,500 or less), who don't have their own tasting rooms, to promote their wines to the trade and public. Although the Garagiste Festival has taken place in other wine regions, this is the first time it's come to the famed Sonoma area. Over 150+ wines will be shown, and guests will be able to learn about these new properties and discover winemakers on the rise.

In classic winemaking regions, where sons often take over winemaking duties from their fathers, the next generation will have a stronger female presence. Entrepreneurial women have been making their mark on the wine industry for years, especially in the New World, but a strong tradition of father-son winemaking teams often excluded daughters from the family business. Today, this is changing and women are carrying on the family winemaking legacy.  -- VINEPAIR

Linfield College announced it will offer a new wine curriculum and bachelor's degree in wine studies. The college plans to differentiate itself from other programs, which focus on winemaking and viticulture, by offering interdisciplinary studies in wine sales, hospitality, and management. The program, made possible by a $6 million grant from Domaine Serene Winery founders Grace and Kevin Evanstad, will be the first of its kind in the U.S. and boost Oregon's burgeoning wine industry. -- SEVENFIFTY DAILY

A new 15-year study showed promising data about wine's health benefits. The University of California at Irvine Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders found consuming two glasses of wine or beer a day, coupled with other healthy lifestyle choices, such as exercise and mentally stimulating activities, result in a longer life span over those who abstained from alcohol. Other preliminary studies found wine may benefit those with Type 2 Diabetes, as well as prevent tooth and gum decay. -- WINE SPECTATOR

Wines damaged by floods due to hurricanes are hitting the market. After attending a recent auction, counterfeit expert and fine wine specialist Maureen Downey warned of an influx of bad bottles in the coming year. Direct to Consumer (DtC) wine sales in 2017 increased 158% from 2016. DtC is a growing business model which allows domestic wineries to ship bottles directly to customers in many states; it now comprises 10% of retail sales. Smaller wineries (annual production of less than 5,000 cases) seem to benefit the most from DtC. In a time when online wine shipping faces multiple challenges, DtC seems to be finding a niche in the complicated industry. -- FORBES
