Cashing in on Snap Filters / Injunction Granted Against Meta / Geocaching Memories

1. Snap’s new Spectacles 3 AR glasses give us an idea of what the spatial computing future could look like. In the long view, Google Glass and Snap’s Spectacles might end up being seen as early, not-so-well-received entrants into a nascent head-worn computing category, writes Mark Sullivan for FastCo. But those early products may help set the stage for the tech company that eventually brings all the pieces together, including a well-designed and easy-to-use product, a strong developer ecosystem, and a marketing push that clearly spells out the benefits to consumers. At that point, we should be heading towards mainstream adoption that will see us relying on AR glasses as much as we rely on our smartphones today.– FAST COMPANY

2. Creators are earning substantial revenues designing Snapchat lenses for individuals and brands. Since October last year, eighteen-year-old Ana Casciello has created about 30 lenses for the platform, racking up over 17 billion views and gaining her a following 214,000 strong. Viral lenses have been key to Snapchat's recent success, with its CFO Derek Andersen saying they resulted in an estimated 7 million to 9 million of the 13 million daily active users Snapchat added during that period. – CNN

Vivian has a background as a lawyer, but her passion for the metaverse has taken her down a slightly different path, from being an early adopter of Second Life to becoming VR's very own "mother of dragons". Her dragons, however, are as far as possible from the roast-you-alive GOT beasts as you can get. I literally dare you not to coo, oooh and ahhh your way through the @BeastPets Twitter feed, which constantly shows an array of the cutest and friendliest AI-powered virtual dragon puppies you're likely to find anywhere. 

Vivian's own Twitter feed @vivslaboratory is also well worth a follow. For those looking to stay plugged into the latest trends and industry news for the immersive space, the "Lady Warrior of the #XR, and Breaker of Code" certainly delivers it. 

4. Defense contractor Lockheed Martin is integrating Augmented Reality across its entire product lifecycles. Its first project began within the Space Systems division, in assembly and quality assurance processes for NASA’s Orion Spacecraft. It has been so successful, however, that the company has now deployed Microsoft's HoloLens and ScopeAR software in other divisions, namely Aeronautics, Missiles and Fire Control, and Rotary and Mission Systems. "We see benefits in having the data available across an entire life cycle, and not only for the flight data, but also for the test equipment and other aspects of our environments that support the manufacturing and operations of that resource," says  Shelley Peterson, Principal Investigator for Augmented and Mixed Reality for Lockheed Martin Space Systems. "Anytime people take paper or computer resources to transfer ideas to something in the real world, there's an opportunity for AR". –ENGINEERING.COM

5. Adobe's new apps reflect an increased focus on creative AR design. After demoing them, Dami Lee writes that this next generation of apps will focus on mixing real-life, physical elements with digital ones, emphasizing experiences “outside of the glass”. These include the Project Glasswing mixed-reality display prototype, as well as Project Aero - which is taking requests for early access here - which allows designers to create immersive experiences through familiar Adobe tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Dimension. According to Adobe chief technology officer Abhay Parasnis, Aero lets artists use drag-and-drop modules to create animations and responsive AR experiences that automatically take into account factors like physics and lighting, which would normally require knowledge of programs like Unity and Apple’s ARKit. – THE VERGE

6. A judge has granted a permanent injunction against Meta company and its founder Meron Gribetz for patent infringement. The company became insolvent in January, and after months of failed attempts to engage it with the legal process, Judge Christopher J. Burke ruled in favor of the plaintiff, Genedics. It is unclear how this will affect the new owners of Meta Company's assets, Meta View, which has taken over its website and posted a new message that reads: "A new spatial computing company is emerging". – NEXT REALITY

7. An app is using Augmented Reality to geocache your memories. “Imagine going to a place you visited long ago and seeing it exactly as it was, with all your friends and loved ones still there, just as you remember them,” says Brandon Martin, CMO of ReplayAR, which combines Instagram with elements of  "Pokémon GO". You essentially capture and freeze your photos in a specific spot, and can visit them again by returning to that specific place. Long-term applications go beyond personal use, however, and range from architectural restoration to forensics, education, and intelligence gathering. ReplayAR is also currently offering a cash prize of $500 for the most creative applications in an effort to drive mass adoption .Those looking to participate can post photos or videos of their potential use-cases on Instagram with the hashtag #ReplayAR.  – VRSCOUT

8. 5G speed, reliability of connection, and lack of drop-out are key to the success of virtual shopping. "People are lazy, they like immediacy, so if you can deliver an immediate experience that's better than one which has a lag to it, you'll have an advantage. For every second that you're waiting for a page to load, you get people who give up," says Paul Lee, head of telecomms, media and, technology research at Deloitte. He adds that the main selling point of Augmented Reality for online retailers is that it takes the guesswork out of shopping for items such as furniture and makeup, eliminating the time and expense of returning and exchanging items, while for bricks-and-mortar shops, it gives them the opportunity to offer customers an enhanced experience in-store. – BUSINESS INSIDER

9. Users can now sign up to use Facebook's Spark AR Studio and create their own Instagram filters and stories with Augmented Reality effects. The tool allows users to add their own sounds files and import 3D objects and models from other platforms such as Sketchfab, as well as using Facebook's free asset library. The tool also allows you to publish directly to Instagram or Facebook stories, and to track how many people use it. – LIFEHACKER
