The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) expressed concerns about Facebook's new smart glasses. The Ray-Bans come with a mounted LED indicator light as the only indicator that the camera is on, which has regulators concerned about users' data privacy.
- Current regulations state, “While it is accepted that many devices including smartphones can record third party individuals, it is generally the case that the camera or the phone is visible as the device by which recording is happening, thereby putting those captured in the recordings on notice."
- Facebook said an LED built into the Ray-Bans will turn on to alert others nearby when a user is taking video.
- The DPC is not convinced that the small LED gives good enough notice.
- The tech company must now prove the LED's effectiveness.
