On Monday, the Department of Justice announced that it would train over 33,000 federal agents and prosecutors in an effort to cleanse the justice system of its “implicit bias.”

With that in mind, take a look at this piece, written by James Baldwin for the July 11, 1966 issue of The Nation, in which he reports on police brutality in New York City and the race riots of 1964.
