As the world’s oceans heat up, the ideal conditions for stronger, more unusual storms are becoming increasingly common. 2015’s Hurricane Joaquin was one of those storms.

Writing for GQ, Tristram Korten tells the terrifying story of two massive ships that were unable to escape Joaquin’s path. While the freighters quickly succumbed to the power of the wind and the waves, the only hope for the surviving crew members was a Coast Guard helicopter squad flying straight into the tempest.
