With a nickname like "Mad Dog," one might think that James Mattis would be a great fit in the Trump administration, as colorful as its leader has shown himself to be. But names can apparently be misleading, as Mattis, the country's the 26th Secretary of Defense, abruptly resigned his post in December 2018, via a letter that made headlines around the globe. Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, says he's known Mattis for many years, and the pair recently spent several hours discussing his experiences in the White House and beyond.
