Yelp has filed an antitrust complaint with the European Union against Google. The review site alleges that Google gives its own Local Search service results favorable positions at the top of search pages, while Yelp and other competitors are relegated to lower search positions which can result in fewer clicks. This comes after Google was fined $2.7 billion by the EU for promoting its own price comparison shopping services over its competitors in search results. Google is appealing that decision. Google declined to comment to CNET on Yelp’s complaint. — CNET

Google and Coursera are teaming up on new machine learning courses to help students build real-world machine learning models. “Machine Learning with TensorFlow on Google Cloud Platform” allows students to create and clean up datasets and write distributed models within TensorFlow. The program allow improves the accuracy of those models and tunes them to find the right parameters. The course is available now. — TECHCRUNCH

YouTube’s streaming music service has begun to roll out. Some users in the United States, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea will be able to access the service, with an international rollout to continue in the weeks to come. YouTube Music is free with ads, $9.99 a month without ads or can be accessed as a part of a bundle with YouTube Premium for $11.99 a month. Google Play Music subscribers will eventually be folded into the service. — THE VERGE

Yelp co-founder Jeremy Stoppelman claims Google skews its search results to favor its own services. As a part of a profile of Google on “60 Minutes,” Stoppelman said "the initial promise of Google was to organize the world’s information and ultimately that manifested itself in you expecting that the top links are the best from around the web. The best the world has to offer and I can tell you that’s not the case anymore."  The “60 Minutes” profile interviews various antitrust lawyers and digital media experts, some arguing that Google’s monopoly on search is similar to John D. Rockefeller’s oil monopoly in the 1800s. Google denied the allegations about skewing search results and told CBS News "our responsibility is to deliver the best results possible to our users, not specific placements for sites within our results," and that it understands why companies whose rankings fall might not be happy about it. — CBS NEWS

Google will alert callers when its AI-powered robocaller Duplex is being used. Executives gave employees their first full Duplex demo and told them the bot would identify itself as the Google assistant. It also said that it would identify that the call is being recorded in certain jurisdictions, due to local laws about recording communications without a party's consent. Company executives told staff that the Duplex team had been thinking about disclosure and ethical implications before a reveal of the software caused controversy. — BLOOMBERG

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin believes the government should take a look at Google. When asked if Google is a monopoly, Mnuchin told CNBC, "These are issues that the Justice Department needs to look at seriously — not for any one company — but obviously as these technology companies have a greater and greater impact on the economy, I think that you have to look at the power they have.” Mnuchin acknowledged that antitrust issues do not fall under his jurisdiction. Google did not respond to the secretary's comments. — CNBC

Google shipped more smart speakers in Q1 than Amazon. According to a report from Canalys, Google shipped 3.2 million Google Home devices in Q1, while Amazon shipped only 2.5 million Echo devices. This represents a 483 percent year-over-year Q1 growth for Google. The overall smart speaker market has grown 210 percent year-over-year, with 9 million speakers sold in Q1 of this year versus 2.9 million sold in Q1 of 2017. — FAST COMPANY

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said he was approached by Google to work on a blockchain project. Buterin shared a screenshot on Twitter of an email from Google recruiter Elizabeth Garcia, appearing to offer him a job. In the original tweet, Vitalik did not hide the recruiter’s name, email address or photo and has since deleted that tweet. Google and Buterin did not respond to The Independent’s request for comment. A group of U.K.-based iPhone users is suing Google for bypassing Apple’s iPhone default privacy settings. The group, identified as Google You Owe Us, is suing Google for $4.29 billion and represents as many as 4.4 million people. The group claims Google used an algorithm that allowed developers to track a user’s browsing history and collect personal information. This algorithm served as a workaround to get past the default settings of the iPhone’s Safari browser, which blocks third-party tracking through cookies. Google denies the group's allegations.— BLOOMBERG

Google has removed the phrase “Don’t be evil” from its code of conduct. “Don’t be evil” has long stood as Google's unofficial company motto. However, once Alphabet sprang up as a corporate parent, the company started using the phrase, “Do the right thing." Now, in Google’s latest version of its code of conduct, “Don’t be evil” has been completely removed except for a single inclusion at the very end, in the line, “And remember… don’t be evil, and if you see something that you think isn’t right – speak up!” — 9TO5GOOGLE

YouTube plans to re-launch its subscription service "Red" as YouTube Premium alongside a new YouTube Music platform. The YouTube Music streaming service, a direct competitor to Spotify and Apple Music, launches on May 22, and will cost $9.99 per month. (An ad-supported free version will also be available, replacing the Google Play music service.) For $2 more per month, subscribers can add YouTube Premium, which offers YouTube Red features, including ad-free YouTube videos and access to YouTube Originals like "Cobra Kai." For now, current YouTube Red subscribers will be grandfathered in at the old $9.99 per month price level. – TECHCRUNCH

Google will hold talks with publishers over Europe’s upcoming General Data Protection Regulation. The company has agreed to meet with a group of publishers at four of its global offices to discuss concerns about the upcoming regulation. Some publishers have been critical of Google’s stance on the new data-protection law and worry that the company’s moves may consolidate its position as a dominant digital advertising platform. — WSJ

The House Appropriations Committee has blocked President Trump’s attempt to help Android manufacturer ZTE.  The company shut down major operations after it was banned from selling devices in the U.S. and from utilizing American manufactured components for violating U.S. export restrictions. President Trump vowed to work with China to save the company, but the amendment filed by the House Appropriations Committee will stop U.S. action on saving the company. — 9TO5GOOGLE

Google is rolling back a Chrome audio update that broke many web-based games. Earlier this month, Google rolled out Chrome version 66, which would quiet autoplay video ads. However, the update ended up completely removing audio from some interactive web projects that relied on specific commands. “The team here is working hard to improve things for users and developers, but in this case we didn’t do a good job of communicating the impact of the new autoplay policy to developers,” Google product manager John Pallett wrote in a blog post. — THE VERGE

The updated Google News app is now available for iOS and Android. Last week, Google teased out a refreshed news app for mobile platforms, which would be hitting 127 countries. The app uses AI to better recommend and curate stories for users. The redesigned app will replace the Google Play Newsstand app, as Google News will integrate more full-length publications and subscriptions. — TECHCRUNCH 

Momentum has been building for a California ballot initiative on data protection. A group has been collecting signatures for the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018, which would allow state residents to request companies not sell or disclose personal data for business purposes. This would likely impact data brokers more than large tech companies, But Google, alongside other tech companies like Verizon and AT&T, has been fighting the measure. — NYT

Waymo is outnumbered by Apple and Cruise in the number of self-driving vehicle testing permits it holds in California. According to the state’s Deparment of Motor  Vehicles, Waymo, which has spent about nine years developing self-driving tech, only has about 52 vehicle permits. GM’s Cruise Automation unit holds 104 vehicle permits, while Apple has 55 vehicle permits to test self-driving cars in the state. Tesla has about 39 permits in California to test autonomous vehicles, while Drive.ai has about 14. Waymo conducts the majority of its self-driving tests outside of the state of California. — USA TODAY

Google’s Head of VR & AR Clay Bavor says that the next generation of controllers will not come to the Lenovo Mirage Solo headset. The Mirage Solo is a 6DoF headset (which allows users to physically walk around and play room-scale VR) but the device ships with a 3DoF controller, unlike the forthcoming Oculus Santa Cruz headset, which features both 6DOF head and controller tracking. It's not clear that Mirage Solo users would benefit from the next generation of 6DoF controllers anyway since lots of the titles on Google's Daydream platform are designed for 3DoF input. — CNET

Waymo is instructing police on how to disable its self-driving cars. Alphabet’s self-driving car division is distributing a 41-page booklet to law enforcement detailing how to break into Waymo’s self-driving cars and disable its technology in the event of an emergency. Among the instructions, “Open one door to prevent the self-driving car from moving. Break a window if doors are locked and immediate entry to vehicle is necessary. Call Waymo to unlock the doors remotely if there is time.” This comes as law enforcement agencies across the country are strategizing on how to enforce the rules of the road with self-driving vehicles. — CNBC

Google is revamping its consumer storage plans. The company is rebranding its consumer-facing storage plans as “Google One.” The company is adding a new $2.99 per month tier for 200 GB of storage and is dropping the price of its 2 TB plan from $19.99 per month to $9.99 per month. Google One subscribers will also be able to share storage quotas with up to five family members. Google One is also offering “one-tap access” to Google experts that can help with any Google consumer product and service.— TECHCRUNCH
