“Last Jedi” director Rian Johnson requested that JJ Abrams make a last minute droid swap at the end of “Force Awakens.” In the original version of “Force Awakens,” R2-D2 remained behind with The Resistance while newly-introduced droid, BB-8, went along with Rey on her adventure to find Luke Skywalker. Johnson requested that, instead, R2-D2 travel with Rey, to provide Luke with “a beloved old friend after so many years of isolation.” BB-8 will still have a key role in “Last Jedi,” adventuring alongside X-wing pilot Poe Dameron. “The last Jedi” opens on December 15th. – EW
